The "To Be Or Not To Be" Part
Dedicated Servers > Guide > Managed VS Unmanaged

How Much Of Responsibility Should You Opt For?

If the previous chapter on hardware issues makes you feel exciting, gear up for taking charge of your dedicated server. A dedicated server presents the challenging task of taking on some of the responsibility for managing the server. How much are you actually responsible, will depend on your decision of whether to go for fully managed or unmanaged server.

With a managed server, the host leases you a server and handles all of the administration errands, leaving you to focus on content & marketing activities - quite comparable with a shared account. The service provider will carry out tasks like updating softwares and installing patches, enabling security firewalls in place as well as monitoring hardware and network for any trouble. A managed solution works well for resellers with limited server administration skills or for those with limited available time for the upkeep of the server.

The typical cost of outsourcing your web server management tasks averages $150-200 on a monthly basis.

With an unmanaged server, the host sets up a machine, pre-installs the base operating system on the server in its default configuration, assigns it an IP address and hooks it to their network, and hands you the root password. Unless there's a problem with the hardware, it's up to you to keep the server running. All further software installation, configuration and administration work is your responsibility.

Your days (and very often nights too) will be spent updating software on your own, applying necessary patches, performing kernel compiles and operating system restorations, installing new software, and monitoring security. With unmanaged dedicated web server, basically you are responsible for day-to-day operations and maintenance. The service provider, however will still, monitor the network, repair hardware problems, and troubleshoot connectivity issues. Additionally, some service providers offer limited management of services, such as network monitoring, software upgrades and other services, but for the general upkeep of the server, you are on your own.
